เรื่องราวเริ่มต้นขึ้นก่อนการปล้นรถไฟ กลุ่มโจรนำโดยเจสซี เจมส์ ( Brad Pitt) มาชุมนุมกัน พูดคุยเรื่องสัพเพเหระ รอให้ค่ำคืนและรถไฟแล่นมาถึง โร เบิร์ต ฟอร์ดชื่นชมเจสซี เจมส์มาตั้งแต่อายุสิบสอง เขาอ่านหนังสือทุกเล่มเกี่ยวกับเจส และในที่สุดก็ได้ร่วมกับเจสแก็งค์ เหมือนฝันเป็นจริง แต่โรเบิร์ตต้องการมากกว่านั้น เขาอยากเป็นเหมือนเจส กล้าหาญและยิ่งใหญ่เหมือนเจส แต่ในความเป็นจริงเขาเป็นได้แค่เด็กหนุ่มไม่เอาถ่านในสายตาของคนรอบข้าง ยิ่งใกล้ชิดกับเจสซีมากเท่าไหร่ โรเบิร์ตก็ยิ่งหลงใหลและหวาดกลัวจอมโจรเจสซี เจมส์มากขึ้นเท่านั้น หลัง จากการปล้นรถไฟครั้งสุดท้าย เจสซีก็สั่งให้ลูกสมุนแยกย้ายกันไป แต่แล้วเจสซีก็ล่วงรู้ว่า ใครบางคนกำลังวางแผนทรยศเขา ใครบางคนซึ่งอยู่ในเจสแก๊งค์ เจสซีตามหาลูกน้องที่กระจัดกระจายไปตามเมืองต่างๆ สืบหาคนทรยศที่เขาหวาดระแวง สมาชิกของเจสแก๊งค์จบชีวิตลงทีละคนๆ บางคนตายอย่างโดดเดี่ยว บางคนถูกสังหารอย่างน่าอนาถ และบางคน... ที่เรายังจดจำเขาได้ตราบนานเท่านาน
