นักต่อรองตัวประกันประจำกรมตำรวจแอลเอ เจฟ แทลลี่ย์ (บรูซ วิลลิส) ยังเสียใจกับเหตุการณ์จับตัวประกันที่ทำให้คุณแม่วัยสาวกับลูกน้อยต้องตาย เขาจึงย้ายจากลอสแองเจลิสไปเป็นสารวัตรที่เมือง บริสโต คามิโน ที่เงียบสงบใน เวนทูร่า เคาน์ตี้ แทลลี่ย์ต้องเผชิญกับสถานการณ์ที่เขาไม่อยากเจออีกครั้ง เมื่อวัยรุ่นอันธพาลสามคนพยายามจะขโมยรถโดยเลือกบ้านผิดหลังและลงมือในวัน ที่ดวงซวย ทั้งสามคนติดอยู่ในบ้านมูลค่าหลายล้านดอลลาร์ย่านชานเมือง ซึ่งเจ้าของบ้านเป็นนักบัญชีที่ฉ้อฉล ด้วยความกลัวพวกเขาจึงจับคนในบ้านเป็นตัวประกัน ไม่ช้าแทลลี่ย์ก็มอบอำนาจให้สำนักงานนายอำเภอไปจัดการแทนตัวเขา แต่ภายในบ้านนั้นมีข้อมูลดิจิตอลที่สำคัญต่อพวกอาชญากรลึกลับ พวกมันพร้อมจะทำทุกอย่างเพื่อให้ได้สิ่งที่เป็นของพวกมัน รวมทั้งการจับครอบครัวของแทลลี่ย์เป็นตัวประกัน ทำให้เขาต้องกลับไปทำคดีนี้ตามเดิม งานนี้เดิมพันสูงและน่ากลัวเกินกว่าที่เขาจะคาดคิด
